Excited-state symmetry breaking: from fundamental photophysics to asymmetrical photochemistry

نویسندگان

چکیده

Excited-state symmetry breaking in multipolar molecules emerged as a novel photophysical phenomenon several years ago, when it was experimentally demonstrated and tracked real time with the help of ultrafast infrared spectroscopy. Since then, significant effort has been devoted to understanding its mechanism, universality, possibilities for tuning by various means. In this work we describe most up-to-date phenomenon, diverse ways observe control it, how leads asymmetrical excited-state reactivity nominally symmetric that can be harnessed achieve photochemistry both intra- intermolecular reactions.

Effect of temperature on symmetry breaking excited state charge separation: restoration of symmetry at elevated temperature.

With an increase in temperature, an unprecedented restoration of symmetry in the symmetry breaking excited state charge transfer is observed in a geminal pair of near-orthogonally connected perylenimide dimers. Such restoration of symmetry could be attributed to the interchromophoric planarization and/or loss of solvation asymmetry at elevated temperature resulting in enhanced fluorescence quan...

Excited-state potential energy surface for the photophysics of adenine.

The decay paths on the singlet excited-state surface of 9H-adenine and the associated energy barriers have been calculated at the CAS-PT2//CASSCF level. There are three fundamental paths for the photophysics: two paths for the (1)L(b) state which are virtually barrierless at the present level of theory and correspond to formation of the (n,pi) intermediate and direct decay to the ground state a...

Photophysics and photochemistry of naphthoxazinone derivatives.

The photophysics and photochemistry of a series of naphthoxazinones have been studied using a combination of methods ranging from steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques to product analysis. The photophysics of naphthoxazinone derivatives is very dependent on the structure: phenanthrene-like compounds exhibit higher fluorescence quantum yield than the less aromatic anthracene-li...

Carbon nanorings with inserted acenes: breaking symmetry in excited state dynamics

Conjugated cycloparaphenylene rings have unique electronic properties being the smallest segments of carbon nanotubes. Their conjugated backbones support delocalized electronic excitations, which dynamics is strongly influenced by cyclic geometry. Here we present a comparative theoretical study of the electronic and vibrational energy relaxation and redistribution in photoexcited cycloparapheny...

Direct Visualization of Excited-State Symmetry Breaking Using Ultrafast Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy.

Most symmetric quadrupolar molecules designed for two-photon absorption behave as dipolar molecules in the S1 electronic excited state. This is usually explained by a breakup of the symmetry in the excited state. However, the origin of this process and its dynamics are still not fully understood. Here, excited-state symmetry breaking in a quadrupolar molecule with a D-π-A-π-D motif, where D and...
